Description

Lakota is a recent USDA released cultivar. It was selected for its high nut quality, high yield potential, early nut maturity, and excellent tree strength. Nuts mature very early, usually by the end of September. It is very precocious, has outstanding scab resistance and is highly productive, making it an excellent selection for the backyard. Lakota has exceptional quality with bright kernels from its medium sized nuts. Nut size has ranged from 46 to 67 nuts per pound. Percent of kernel is good and it shells out fine. Harvest is early, being one of the first pecans you’ll harvest. A very vigorous and strong tree.

Pecan nuts are a natural source of antioxidants, protein, unsaturated fats, and more.

Aside from producing some of the most delicious nuts on earth, pecan trees make very nice shade trees in the edible landscape. Ornamental features include the attractive pinnately compound deep green leaves that turn golden-yellow in fall, and slate-grey color bark that has a lightly fissured texture.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 70 to 100 feet tall and 40 to 70 feet wide, the Lakota Pecan Tree is ideal for use as a shade tree and beauty in large landscapes. Because the tree drops a lot of nuts in late summer into fall, we suggest planting at least 35 feet away from a home. A fine addition to edible landscapes, wildlife gardens and native gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 80 feet for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Lakota Pecan tree is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, organically rich, well-drained soils and is intolerant of some shade. Very drought tolerant when established.
